Many of yall have heard of Westboro Baptist Church out of Kansas. If that name doesn’t sound familiar think godhatesfags.com. Yeah, those people. They protest just about anything for any reason, most infamously the funerals of American soldiers.
Well, today they decided to come picket the SC State House for not removing Governor Sanford from office after his affair. Most people can probably see that their aim is not at all Christian, but a twisted message of hate in order to gain attention. Reasoning with these people is useless. Another reaction, counter-protesting and yelling in their faces, also useless.
Being aware of their plans to come here, and of various student organizations’ counter protest plans, a group of Christians decided to head over there to just true love.
We didn’t try to reason with the religious crazies. We didn’t condemn any of the atheist or gay groups, many of them yelling equally hateful and irreverent slurs. We simply gave away water bottles to whoever wanted them. WBC, Pastafarians, or the cops dividing the two groups.
We didn’t carry any signage advertising who we were. We simply answered when asked who we were and why we were doing it “We’re a group of Christians that want to show love.”
Kudos to Matt Waken for organizing the group. I hope that in a large crowd of hate on both sides, at least one person got a glimpse of true Christian love that my brothers were showing today.

This is so awesome. When I first heard of this, I thought it was going to be a sort of counter protest or that some christians were going to talk to them. (which as you said, is not a good idea.) But what you did was wonderful. These people upset me to no end and I decided that I didn’t want to give them the attention that they’re after. But I’m so proud of you guys for stepping up and being the true image of christ to everyone who was there. Kudos!
thanks. it felt great to just be out there being kind without trying to persuade anyone about anything
Dude, mad props for sure. I think that's the best response in sticky situations like that one.
But I have to give them credit, the people with signs that said: "God hates Nickelback" and "God hates the new Facebook"…That's freakin funny.
haha, yeah. I saw those. "God hates the new facebook" was my favorite one
